If you vape, you’ve probably heard about nicotine salt vape juice. Nicotine salts are a great option for someone that’s just getting into vaping since they offer an experience that’s much more familiar to those who are used to smoking, but should you try nicotine salts if you already vape?
With such high nicotine concentrations and a storm of controversy swirling around nicotine salts, it’s easy to paint a pretty bad picture about this new massively popular style of vape juice. As vapers, we know that not everything you hear on the internet tells the truth about vaping, so let’s push past these stigmas and have an honest discussion about nicotine salts.
First things first: What exactly is nicotine salt vape juice?
Nicotine salt vape juice is essentially the exact same thing as regular vape juice, aside from a difference in one key feature: nicotine. Whereas regular vape juice uses freebase nicotine, nicotine salt vape juice uses nicotine salts, in which an acid is added to bring the pH of the nicotine closer to the pH of your lungs. Other than that, it’s still just nicotine.
Since freebase nicotine has a rather high pH, you will feel a sort of burn when you vape it. The more balanced pH of nicotine salts smooths out this burn significantly, and it allows your body to more easily absorb the nicotine that’s inhaled. This results in rapid spikes in blood nicotine level that are very similar to what you would get from a cigarette, as opposed to the lower and gentler curve in blood nicotine level that freebase nicotine provides.
Nicotine salts typically come in very high nicotine levels such as 35 and 50mg, where freebase nicotine is rarely found at concentrations above 24mg. The smoother hit that nicotine salts provide means that these higher concentrations of nicotine are much more comfortable to vape than high concentrations of freebase nicotine, and these higher concentrations allow for that familiar spike in blood nicotine level. This also means that you must be very mindful of your nicotine intake when using nicotine salts.
To use nicotine salts responsibly, we can again compare them to cigarettes. The best way to vape nicotine salt vape juice is to use a low-powered device that provides a mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw style, much like the experience that you would get from a cigarette. If you’re used to puffing on freebase nicotine vape juice, the frequency of your puffs will likely also be reduced. The stronger dose of nicotine usually means that you will be getting significantly more nicotine per puff than you’re used to, so taking puff after puff can quickly result in a mild nicotine overdose.
If you get a head rush or notice you’re starting to feel nauseous, you’re probably getting too much nicotine. Set your vape down for a while and drink some water, and the feeling will subside. To avoid getting too much nicotine, make sure you’re using a low-powered device like a pod vape, don’t take too many puffs at once, and use a reasonable nicotine level. 35mg works for most people, but you can often find nicotine salt vape juice as low as 25mg, which is a quite relaxed nicotine level with nicotine salts.
So now that we know who nicotine salt vape juice is intended for and how to use it, should you try nicotine salts if you already vape?
If you’re perfectly happy with your current vaping experience, then trying nicotine salts probably isn’t necessary. But if you’re reading this article, you’re probably wondering if you can improve your vaping experience! If you feel like your vape is too harsh, if you feel like you need more nicotine but you find higher nicotine levels too uncomfortable, if you find that you’re still smoking despite the fact that you’ve been vaping for a while, or if you’re planning to transition to vaping, then you should definitely try nicotine salts!
If you have already been using freebase nicotine for a while, nicotine salts probably won’t feel right to you. If you’re like me, you like the throat hit that freebase nicotine provides, and the higher nicotine levels clash with how often you like to puff. If you like the bigger clouds and lung-filling sensation of high-powered mods and sub-ohm tanks, you probably won’t find any satisfaction in the lower power levels necessary for use with nicotine salts.
If you don’t already use nicotine, then nicotine salts are probably not for you. If you choose to start using nicotine, you should know that you will develop an addiction. The rapid nicotine delivery of nicotine salts provides your brain with a strong reward for the associated action of vaping, which will make your brain want more and more. Nicotine is an extremely difficult addiction to give up, which is one of the primary reasons that vaping exists in the first place. We strongly recommend keeping your life free of nicotine addiction if you still have that choice to make.
If you’ve been vaping for a while and you’ve managed to lower your nicotine level over time, you probably won’t want to jump back up to the high nicotine levels commonly associated with nicotine salts. You can find nicotine salts at lower nicotine levels like 3 and 6mg, but for now, they’re still very uncommon. It’s also worth noting that those low mg nicotine salts are exceptionally smooth, which can almost make it feel like vaping 0mg. This idea is attractive to some, but most people prefer the bite that freebase nicotine provides.
If you are trying to quit vaping, nicotine salts probably not the best option. Since nicotine salts are so rarely found at lower nicotine levels, they don't really offer any options for reducing your nicotine level. Freebase nicotine vape juice is easily found at lower nicotine levels, which makes it much easier to reduce your nicotine level, and subsequently stop using nicotine altogether.
TL;DR : There is no clear-cut answer. Everyone's body is different and everyone has had different experiences throughout their struggle with nicotine addiction. If you feel like something has been lacking in your vaping experience or you haven't been able to kick the cancer-sticks yet, give it a shot. If vaping has been going fine for you, then there's really no need.
